Archaeologists have uncovered the world’s oldest known pair of shoes, beutifully preserved and still together. They are known as the Fort Rock Sandals and were ptroduced by twined sagebrush bark, constructd with a flat sole and a toe wrap. Other somewhat different styles have been disciovered in the region. The production method is somewhat like basket weavuing. Multiple pairs hasve been discovered. They were found beneath a layer of volcanic ash, coming from the eruption of Mount Mazama approximately 5,600 BC. Only after the developopment of Carbon 14 dating have examoples been more accurately dated to 8-7,000 BC. Researchers speculate that the sandals were worn by sequring the thongs around the ankle and tieing them on the opposite side.
