Figure 1.--

In other families the boys woud wear both similar or identical clothes and identical hair styles. Some parents, presumably it was usually the mothers idea, wanted to dress the their sons identically. This was most common for twins, both identcal and fraternal. Some of the children were dressed it exactly the same outfits. The most common hair styles for these boys was short hair. Some boys, however, did also have identical longer hair styles as well. This of course required some effort on the part of the mothers. At this time we have no information on the chronological trends involved here. Nor do we have details on the clothing styles and hir styles involved. The boys involved were normally younger boys. These identical styles were not common by the times the boys had become teenagers.

Individual Families

HBC has noticed several examples of families where the brothers were outfitted in both identical outfits and hair styles.

Brothers in the 1890s

HBC has noticed two brothers about 1890 that were dressed in identical kneepants suits with a tunic-like jacket. These boys appeared to come from a middle class, not a wealthy family. The boys wear identical ringlet curls and hairbows. Curriously, they were not photographed together, but rather separetly on the same day. The boys look to be about 6 years old.
