We note most boys seemed to wear jackets and pants that did not match. A good example is unidentified American boys about 1850.

The 1860s

Most boys wore long pants suits in the 1860s. A popular style for younger boys by the 1860s was the cut-away jacket suit. It was often worn with shortenened-length trousers, but we also see them being worn with long pants. A good example is a German boy. Sack suits were almost always worn with long pants no matter what the age of the boy. A good example is a 12-year old American boy, Clifton Harrison, in 1866. Boys Clifton's age and older all wore long trousers in both America and Europe.

The 1870s

Most boys vontinued to wear long pants suits in the 1870s. A good example is an American boy, Elmer Dayton in 1870. We see more knee pants in the 1870s, but long pants were still more common for even younger boys.
