French Eton Collars: Clothing

Figure 1.--This French post card shows a boy wearing an Eton collar with shirt-like jacket and matcjing kneepants. The card is undated, but we would estimate that it dates to about 1910. Note that he wears his Eton collar with a bow.

We have very few images of French boys wearing Eton collars. As a result, we can not yet assess what clorges were worn with Eton collars. We can make some preliminary observations. English boys generally wore Eton collars with a suit jacket. Presumably French boys did also, although it was probably less common. We do not yet have any such images to conform this. We note some images of French boys wearing Eton collars with a shirt-like jacket during the early 20th century. These outfits normally had kneepants. Most available French images show boys wearing Eton collars with kneepants or bloomer knickers.

The French boy shown here wears his hair in a very modern style (figure 1). He wears a rather stiff looking Eton collar attached to a collarless green jacket, though I really think it is a front buttoning blouse with a muted plaid design. Two sets of tucks in the front (pleats maybe) button cuff sleeves and the bottom of the blouse probably pulled together by a drawer string though the latter comment is a guess. He wears green knee length shorts with ornamental buttons and a leather belt. His tie looks like a red scarf tied in a floppy fashion probably without a bow. His dark (possibly black) socks are three-quarter length. His shoes look to be high laced cloth with high polished leather at the bottom.
