Also notice the stylized motif arond the edge of the card. Mother has attempted to style their hair, but it is not long enough to do in ringlets. The studio was D.L. Cook in Fort Scott, Kansas.

American Fauntleroy Kilt Suits: Chronology--1890s

We have found most of our exmples of Fayntleroy kilt suits from the 1890s. We see cut-away jackets and fancy Fauntleroy blouses. We have found both pleated and unpleated kilt-skirts. We note a Pennsylvania boy, Freddie Miller Shelton wearinf a velvet Fauntleroy kilt suit, probably about 1890. The mount pinking dates the portrait to 1888-95. Freddie was 5 1/2 years old. He wears a classic cut -away jackets with a matching kilt skirt. Notice the buttons in the kilt-skirt. Another good example are unidentified Kansas brothers in 1895, again with dark kilt skirts (figure 1). The boys look to be 3-4 years old. This seems more common than the plaid kilt-sirts we sometimes see.
