Kiltsuit Headwear

Figure 1.-- Many boys wearing kilt suits wore wide-brimmed sailor hats and other sailor styles. HBC has not yet fully assessed the types of headgear most commonly worn. We believe that tams were also popular. The boy here was from Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. The portrait is undated, but we would guess was taken in the 1880s. Notice the support stand behind the boy.

We do not note kilt suits made with matching headear. Rather a great variety of headwear was used. This included tams and sailor styles. Many boys wearing kilt suits wore wide-brimmed hats. Sailor caps were also worn, but hats were more popular. HBC has not yet fully assessed the types of headgear most commonly worn. We believe that tams were also popular. Few images show boys in kiltsuits wearing their head gear, primarily because most of the available images are studio portraits and mothers usually wanted the boys' hair to show. Many mothers, however, insisted on the boy's hat or cap be in the portrait and the headgear is often on a table or lying on the floor. The kiltsuit was a popular style for boys in the late 19th century before the turn of the century. It was still worn after the turn of the century, but not nearly as commonly. Thus there are relatively few outdoors family snapshots. Almost all of the available images or indoors studio portraits in which the boys are not wearing their hats or caps. The few where they are we notice broad-brimmed sailor hats, sailor caps, and tams. Other styles were also worn, but we have few examples.

Photography

Few images show boys in kiltsuits wearing their head gear, primarily because most of the available images are studio portraits and mothers usually wanted the boys' hair to show. Many mothers, however, insisted on the boy's hat or cap be in the portrait and the headgear is often on a table or lying on the floor. This is a little difficult to assess, because boys in kilt suits for some reason are rarely pictured with their headwear. Thus there are relatively few outdoors family snapshots.

Scottish Styles

Scottish theme headwear such as Balmorals and Glengarys were also popular choices. They of course were popular because they seemed so appropriate with a kilt-styled garment. Even so we do not see them being worn very commonly, at least in America. We suspect that they my have been a more common choice in England and Scotland.
