This American boy was photographed in Brockton which I believe is in Massachusetts. It is undated, but the Eton collar suggests the 1890s. Note the flat pannel kilted styling on his kiltsuit. The boy looks to be 4-5 years old.
This portrait is undated. We have little information on kilt suits in the 1870s. The "V"-cut in the jacket looks to us as a 1880s style. Large floppy bows were worn in the 1880s and 90s. Wearing an Eton collar with a bow, however, seems more of a 1890s style. We thus believe a date of about 1890 would seem appropriate.
This American boy was photographed in Brockton which I believe is in Massachusetts.
We have no information on the boy's identity. The rather elegant suit, however, and the carefully done ringlet curls suggest that he came from an affluent family.
The boy looks to be 4-5 years old.
He wears what looks to be a checkered floppy bow. It is large, but not enormous like many bows worn by boys this age. We do not know what color it may have been.
The boy wears an Eton collar with his kilt suit. We have not yet assessed the popularity of the various collar styles. We have seen other American boys wearing Eton collars with kilt suits, both with and without bows. Eton collars in Britain were worn with proper Highland kilts. It seems, however, that lace or ruffkled collrs were more common with these suits than Eton collrs.
It is not clear what type of blouse the boy is wearing. The Eton collar may is surely a detachable collar. Note that there are no collar cuffs visible at the wrists.
Thecjacket is single breasted and completely buttoned up. Note the deep "V" in the jacket. There is a visible side pocket on the jacket. There probably was also one on the other side.
We can tell that the kilt suit was a light color. We have no idea, however, what color it was, perhaps a light tan.
The skirt does have kilt styling. Note the flat pannel. As woth many such suits there is a double row of buttons, presumably ornamental, on the kilt skirt. The length is well below knees, perhaps mid calf with a large hem (note the descerbable hem line right at the bottom button). This suggests the kilt skirt was purchased with a length that perhaps could be let down as the boy grows. This rather contrasts with the jacket which seems already too small for him. (Note the sleeve length.)
The boy is wearing long black stockings.
The boy wears high button, highly polished or patent leather shoes.
The boy has ringlet curls well passed his shoulders.
