Unidentified American Boy: Clothing

Figure 1.-- This American boy wears a tunic suit has destinctive diagonal styling. It is a suit as the knee pants match the tunic. The CDV portrait is undated, but was probably taken in the late-1860s. The portrait was taken in Frankford, Pennsylvania. Note the brss buttons.

This American boy wears a tunic suit has destinctive diagonal styling. It is a suit as the knee pants match the tunic. A was common at the time, mother dressed the boy up for his portrait. He is wearing a dark tunic suit. It looks lke it was colored, perhaos brown. Other colors ike burgundy or forest green are posible. The material looks to be velvet (velveteen) suit of jacket and knee length trousers. Itis difficult to tell from a photograph, but it looks lke it might hve been velvet. It is a soft fabric that would fall nicely the way this velvet is cut as it has a bit of a flare past the waist. It could have been a cotton but the ensemble looks too "rich" to be cotton. The jacket is trimmed in piping along all edges and the sleeves have 4 to 5 inch cuffs that come to a point--a military touch. In addition, the tunic has a diagonal placket lined with buttons which have been colored or tinted as gold (brass) on the image. These buttons are also on the belt, the shoulder and the cuffs of the jacket sleeves. The buttons also are on the side seam of the leg of the pants, but the photographer or his/her artist did not tint or color those (as well as one on his shoulder). There is a tiny bit of white collar showing at the neck, and this is probably from the shirt underneath. He is also wearing white stockings or socks, and he has on shin high lace/button boots that are really in fairly nice condition as compared to others. He holds in his left hand a rounded-crown hat with a small streamer. It is made of straw (which can be seen on the magnification).
