Cut-away Jackets: Accompanying Clothes

Figure 1.--This cbinent card from Delevan, Illinois showa a little American boy about 3 years ols wearing a cut-away jacket with a kilt/skirt. The portrait is undated, but was probaly taken in the 1870s.

We are unsure at this time about the headwear worn with these jackets. We suspect that a major factor here was the type/styling of the jacket and suit. We think that these jackets may somerimes have been worn with vests. Here a major exception was the Fauntleroy suit. The cut-away jacket was commonly worn as part of a Fauntleroy suit so the fancy blouse commonly worn with these suits would be exposed to maximum affect. We see these jackets worn with both kilt/skirts and trousers. We do notice them with skirts, but are unsure about the gender of the child in the available images. Generally they were worn with shortened-length trousers like bloomer knickers and kneepants. Less common were long pants. At least in America kneepants were more common with Fauntleroy suits.

Headwear

We are unsure at this time about the headwear worn with these jackets. We see an English boy, Richsard Wade Gery, with a flat-toped sailor hat in 1873.

Shirts/Blouses

We suspect that a major factor here was the type/styling of the jacket and suit. As many of these suits were worn with vests, usdully all we can see is he collar.

Neckwear

Vests

We think that these jackets may somerimes have been worn with vests. Here a major exception was the Fauntleroy suit. The cut-away jacket was commonly worn as part of a Fauntleroy suit so the fancy blouse commonly worn with these suits would be exposed to maximum affect. This wasa aart of the suit and not an accompsanying item.

Trousrs/Skirt

We see these jackets worn with both kilt/skirts and trousers. We do notice them with skirts, but are unsure about the gender of the child in the available images. Generally they were worn with shortened-length trousers like bloomer knickers and kneepants. Less common were long pants. At least in America kneepants were more common with Fauntleroy suits.

Hosiery

Boys commonly wore these suits with long sdtovkings, at least the ones worn with shortened-length trousers. White stickings were common in the 1860s. Stripoed stockigs were common in the 1870s.
