German Norfolk Jackets and Suits: Chronology

Figure 1.--We note a number of German boys wearing jackets and suits with Norfolk jackets at the turn of the 20th century. This image is unidentified, except that it was taken in Lobenstein. The Norfolk jacket appears to have been a popular school style ( Schulanzugs ). Image courtesy of the MD collection.

We do not have a large numbers of images of Gereman boys wearing Norfol jackets at this time. Those images that we do have are often unfortunately not dated, complicating a chronological assessment. As best we can tell, Norfolk jackets were especially popular in Germany in the early 20th century, from about 1900-25, but that is just a prelinary assessment at this time. We are not precisely sure when German boys first began wearing Norfolk jackets. We do do note some German boys wearing Norfolk suits in what appear to be the 1890s. The style is much less in evidence by the 1930s. Unfortunately, many of the available images of German boys wearing Norfolk jackets are undated. We are unsure just when the image here was taken. We think that it was proabably taken at the turn of the 20th century, in part because it was a CDV which become less common in the 1900s (figure 1). We beliece that about 1905 would be a reasonable guess. One interesting aspect of this portrait is the high shirt collar that this boy wears under his jacket. Note the jacket buttons at the collar and does not have lapels.

The 1930s

The style is much less in evidence by the 1930s. We still notice, however, boys wearing Norfolk suits or at least suits with some Norfolk styling elements. A good example is an unidentified teenager in 1933.
