Unidentified German Boys (1900s)

Figure 1.--This CDV portrait was taken by Siegfried Bing. These brothers wear matching white Norfolk suits with knickers and dark long stockings. Notice the bows and Eton collars and matching caps. One boy has a racket. I am not sure if it is for tennis or badmiton. The portrait is undated, but we would guess was taken in the 1900s.

This CDV portrait was taken by Siegfried Bing. The boys are unidentified, but look to be aout 12 years old. These brothers wear matching white Norfolk suits with knickers and dark long stockings. This would have been seen as a summer outfit. Dark stockings were so common that we see them being worn with white summer outfits. A factor here may have been that older boys did not want to war white long stockings as they were commonly worn by girls. Notice the bows and Eton collars and matching caps. Matching caps would have been considered a natty outfit at the time. The fact that the boys had a white suit for casual or sporty activities suggest that they came from an affluent family. Photography

This is a CDV portrait. CDVs continued to be popular in Europe after they had largely disappeared in America where cabinet cards were more popular. I'm not sure why this difference occurred.

Studio

The portrait was taken by Siegfried Bing. A person by this name emigrated to Frnce in 1894 and under the name of Samuel Bing became an imprtant figure in noveau art. We do not think they were the same individuals, but may have been related.

Chronology

The portrait is undated, but we would guess was taken about the turn of the 20th century in the 1900s. It could have been taken in the late-1890s, but we think the 1900s is more likely, in part because of the strap shoes.

Location

While the photographer is named, the location is not. We think it is probably German, but Austria or Switzerland are possibilities. The much larger size of Germany, however, makes it more likely. Most German CDVs and cabinent cards indicated where the portrait was taken. We thought that since Berlin was such an important city that the photographer might have thought it unecessaet to indicate the city. A German collector, however, tells us, "No, no town on front is not a sign for Berlin. It might be anything. You need to look at the back view which pobably has information about the studio."

Sport

One boy has a racket. I am not sure if it is for tennis or badmiton. People at the tme tended to dress up, even for sports or cassual occassions.
