American Sailor Suits: Conventions (Inter-war and World War II Years)

Figure 1.--This is a photo RPPC postcard with three siblings. The portrait is undated, but it is a AZO postcard with squares in the corners. This means that is was taken sometime during or after 1923. We would wstimate that it was taken in the late 1920s. The tan long stockings suggest the late-20s or 30s.

The Family

This is a photo RPPC postcard with three siblings, two boys and a girl. The children are unidentified. They look about 5-9 years old. The girl looks to be the oldest child.

Location

We do not know where the children were from, other than they are American.

Chronology

The portrait is undated, but it is a AZO postcard with squares in the corners. This means that is was taken sometime during or after 1923, although there is soe difference of opinion as to how to date this type of AZO stamp box. We would estimate that it was taken in the late 1920s. The tn long stockings suggest the late-20s or 30s. A reader writes, " I agree with your dating. I would say about 1927-28."

Clothing

The boys wear identical sailor suits, probably light-blue suits. The only dufference is the sailor scarves and their strap shoes. One boy has double straps. They are traditinal suits with three-stripe detailing. Curiously there are only two stripes on the cuffs. They look to be button-on suits. Notice thecank emblem on the sleeve. Their sister wears a simple dress, perhaps in the same color. Note the embroidered flowers below the neckline. These look like light-weight summer suits. Note that the children are wearing tan/beige long stockings and color that first commonly appeared after World War I. I supose they could be grey, but beige was much more common. A reader writes, "Not only the color of the stockings (beige) but also the ribbing is interesting. Ribbed stockings were considered more masculine and better for boys." They were not being worn for warmth as these are summer suits. Apparently mother thought tht they were more appropriate for a formal potrait which probably explains the strap shoes as well.

Hair Styles

All three children have their hair done in bangs. The difference is the hair cut at the side. Te boys have sjort hair at the side. Their sister has hair down to their ears.
