Danish Sailor Suits: Age Trends

Figure 1.-- Here we see three siblings in a cabinet card portrait. The boy wers a traditional sailor suit and his sisters polka dot dresses. The chilsren are Willy - 10 1/2 years old, Karen 7 years amd Ella 17 months. The portrait is undated but the nannow cabinet card format and grey color help date it to the early-20th century, we think the 1900s. The studio was Emil Clausen in Copenhagen.

We are not sure yet about the age range for sailor suits in Denmark. We just do not have sufficent images at this time. Our initual assessment is about 3-16 years of age. We are fairly sure about this age range, although some slightly older boys may have worn sailor suits. This is just the age range we can confirm with actual images we gave foi=und which is based on a small sampling. As in Germany that they were worn by younger teens, but we also note boys wearing them in their mid-teen, perhaps even older boys. This of course varied over time. Sailor suits were worn in Denmark for about a century. Despite the close association with the British royal fmily (Princess Alexandria married the Price of Wales--the future Edward VII), we suspect that many conventions like age were more associsted with Germany than Britain. Age trends of course varied over time. Younger boys wore sailor suits during the whole span that sailor suits were worn. We are not entirely sure when sailor suits were most popular for older boys. We think it might be during the early-20th century, but this still needs to be confirmed.

Age 8

On the previous oage we see an oval portarit of a boy who looks to be 8-9 years old. This Danish boy had his portrait painted in 1915. Notice the double row of three strips. We don't recall seeing that before.

Age 10

Here we see three siblings in a cabinet card portrait. The boy wers a traditional sailor suit and his sisters polka dot dresses. The chilsren are Willy - 10 1/2 years old, Karen 7 years amd Ella 17 months (figure 1). The portrait is undated but the nannow cabinet card format and grey color help date it to the early-20th century, we think the 1900s.

Age 15

We note a portrait a cabinet portrait of the Maaneden family. It looks like Edith is 7 years old. Big brother Knud is 15 years old. The children are dressed in nearly matching sailor suits except for the skirts and pants. Her bow is tied differently, and the stripes on the dickey are slightly different. Also notice Edith's colored hair bow. The dealer dates the portrait to the 1890s.

Age 16

We have found a CDV portrait of three Danish brothers. There is associated information. Even the studio information is garbeled. We are not sure how to date the portrait. The dealer syggests the 19109s-20s. We think the 1900s-1910s is more likely. The two older boys look to be about 13-16 years old. They wear identical sailor suits exceot for the oants. The younger boy wears a knee panys sailor suit woth long stickings and the older boy wears a long pants sailor suit.
