Individual Traditional Sailor Suits: Summer Bllomer Knickers (1913)

Figure 1.--This 1913 French postcard that shows a Boy about 5 or 6 years of age wearing a white sailor suit with long white stockings. The little girl also wears long stockings. The card greeting says, "Bonne Fête", meaning good party with the presummed sence of "happy birthday".

This traditional light-colored sailor suit is rather plain and similar to American style sailor suits. It has a redish hue due to the coloring. It may have actually been white. There are the traditional three stripes on the sailor collar and cuffs. The blouse may have front buttons but appears to billow at the bottom. There does not appear to be any dicky. The trousers appear to be the bloomer-style knickers that were popular for boys in France. The boy wears white stockings and black patent leather strap shoes. The stockings appear to be on the heavy side and are not the more shere stockings normally worn for dressy occasions. Note the bows on the shoes. Many pictures from this time show boys wearing white patent leather shoes and three quarter socks. His hair is parted on the left side and falls in curls around his ears.
