German Sailor Suit Chronology: Style (1880s)

Figure 1.--This CDV was done like a minature cabinet card with dark brown color and gold letters and trim. The children are unidentifiedn but we know they were from Göttingen, a university town in Lower Saxony. The stufio was Bernh. Petri. The boy on the right wears an embroidered sailor blouse. The other child also seem to be wearing an enbroidered blouse, but not a sailor blouse. The drum was probably a studio prop. We wonder if the children got to do a little drumming. A German reader tells us, "The child on the left is probably a girl." She tells us, "Both children look to be related. The girl is taller. So why shouldn't be the taller child be breeched before the younger child. You can see the skirt through the balustrade. The girl has a center hair part. The boy has a side part. The girl has a necklace, while thed the boy does not. You rarely see a boy with this kind of high collar the girl is wearing."

We note quite a variety of sailor outfits in Germany during the 1880s. We notice sailor suits in America and Britain becoming increasinly standardized in the 1880s. We think that process was not as well developed in Germany. Thus we see a much greater variety of outfits with sailor styling. We see Germans boys wearing outfits that do not look at all like sailor suits, except there may be a nautical symbol like an anchor on the collar. Others have various sailor features. We see some outfits with the V-collar, although often not dome with the classic stripes.
