We see a variety of sailor suit styles, including some more traditionaly styled sailor suits in the 1890s. M Here we see a boy wearung a blouse with three-stripe styling. Many suits, however, did not have traditional styling with the three-stripe detailing. We do note one German collar style that seems to have been popular in the 1880, 1890s, and early 1900s. The style incorporated a more formal white collar with a sailor suit, a kind of double collar. You can see the boy here wearing one (figure 1). We also see those in the 1900s. One of the virtues of the sailor suit was that it was a comfortble style. We only see these stiff coolars in Germany.
We are not sure what to call this collar. It is something like a connecting collar as the two wings overlap. It looks to be an added collar, not part of the sailor suit itself. We have not noted American boys wearing this style, but we are unsure to what extent this was a destinctive German fashion. We also note it being worn in the early 20th century. More traditional styles began to become more standard in the 1890s. Most boys in the 1890s wore knee pants as part of their sailor suits. The portrait here is undated, but we believe it was probably taken in the 1890s, in part because of the length of the knee pants and the styling of the girls' dresses (figure 1). We see some double-breasted sailor suits.
The top was the most detinctive prt of the sailor suit. This include both blouses and jackets. Most sailor tops were done with the open V-front and back flap, but not always. More traditional styles began to appear in the 1890s, especioally the klate-90s. Th boy here is a good example. We note some blouses with Norfolk features. That was something we do not see very commonly in other countries. We also see some double-breasted sailor suits. Both were popular styles in the 1890s wjhich is hy thy swre incorprted in som sailor outfits. We see some tops with doujble collars, presumably an efflrt to make a more formal sailor outfit. We see sailor suits done with different types of pants. Most German boys in the 1890s wore knee pants as part of their sailor suits. In America nd Britin w see some long pnts. This was lss common in Germany. The boy in the portrait portrait here is wearing knee pants with blck long stockings (figure 1). The portrait is undated, but we believe it was probably taken in the 1890s, in part because of the length of the knee pants and the styling of the girls' dresses. We do not see many long pants sailor suits. We do not note any detailing on the pants, unlike the pants we noted during the 1870s.
