German 19th Century--Late Victorian Sailor Suits: Decades--1870s

Figure 1.--This CDV portrait was taken by H. Dippel in Hofgeismar. It is undated, but looks like it was taken in the early-1870s to us. We say that because of the boy's outfit. Note the non-traditional middy bouse, longsh knee pants, and white stokings. Also the hat seems an early style. The pose and set look like a very early CDV. The card is perfornated, but we are not sure about the dating conventins involved. Note the streamer on his hat.

We at first assumed that sailor suits began to become popular in Germany during the 1870s. We are now less sure. We do not know just how popular they were. We know that Princess Victoria introduced the sailor suit as boys' wear when she dressed Prince Wilhelm in sailor suits during the 1860s. What we do not know is how rapidly the style became popular among the general public. We do not yet have a portrait of a German boy wearing a sailor sit during the 1870s, at least one with a date on it. We believe, however, the boy in a sailor suit here was photographed in the 1870s. Out our archive of 19th century German images is still relatively limited so it is proably not a good reflection of pverall popularity. A German reader with a much more extensive collection tells us that while she notes sailor suits in England during the 1870s, she does not yet notice them in Germany. The image here is a first. As a result, we are unsure about the styles. The boy's middy blouse here is not a traditional style. Children's clothes in the 1870s were commonly sewn at home by mothers so there would have been considerable variety as to actual sailor styles. This was the case in England. We suspect that only yoingr German boys wore sailor suits in the 1870s. In the 20th century we see even teenagers wearing sailor suits. We don't think thi was the case in the 1870s. We are unsure if girls woe them.
