German Sailor Suits Dickies: Design--Embroidered Designs

Figure 1.--This boy had his CDV portrait taken in Dresden. The portrait was undated, but was probably taken about 1910. Notice the embroidered design--a Swiss flag. We have nver seen this before. Perhaps the boy had Swiss relatives or was a Swiss boy visiting his German relatives. He also had a shoulder patch.

The embroidered designs used for sailor suit dickies were even more varied. Most common were understandable nautical motifs, but the designs were not limited to nautical motifs. We see quite a range of motifs, some of which we can not make out. Others we do not fully understand. The embroidered designs seen quite popular before World War I, after the War the stripes become increasingly popular. We tend to see these embroidered designs mucg more commonly in America where stripes were not as common. We suspect the reason for this was the styles adopred by navies in North Anerica and Europe. Sailor suit styles for boys generally followeed patterns set by national navies. Navy uniforms did not have embroidered design dickies, but many fis have stroiped "T"-shirts.
