German Sailor Suit Neckwear: Floppy Bows

Figure 1.--Here we see two German brothers wearing matching striped sailor suits with their sister. The family was from Hamburg. The portrait is undated, but I would gudss was taken about 1910. Notice that mother has used floppy polkadot bows instead of the normal black scarves.

It is very rare to see sailor carves with casually tied bows. We have noted others neckwear, such as floppy bow, but they were relatively rare. We do notice a few. Presumably these were boys with especially fashion concious mothers. We are guessing the boys would have worn these floppy bows for special occassions. We notice different patterns, both plain bows as well as patterns such as plaid or polka dots. Sometimes floppy bows were used instead of the standard sailor scarves. We also see boys done up with floppy bows as well as neck scarves. A good example is an unidentified Berlin boy about 1905.
