Sailor Suits: Germany--Hair Styles

Figure 1.--Before World War I cropped haor seems to have been the most common hair style German boys wore with sailor suits, pribably because the hair style was so popular. After World War I bangs became increasingly popular.

We note German boys wearing sailor suits with many different hair styles. Here we notice chronological differences. Age was another factor affecting hair styles. Before World War I cropped hair seems to have been the most common style worn with sailor suits, probably because the hair style was so popular. A very large percentage of Germany boys had cropped hair during the early 20th century when sailor suits were especially popular. After World War I bangs became increasingly popular. We note in the 1920s boys with essentially cropped hair, except in front where the hair was allowed to grow long enough for bangs. The boy here is a good example (figure 1). We notice various other styles using parts, mostly relatively short hair styles. We notice a few boys wearig sailor suits with curls, but not nearly as many as in America and other countries.

Bangs

After World War I bangs became increasingly popular. We note in the 1920s boys with essentially cropped hair, except in front where the hair was allowed to grow long enough for bangs. The boy here is a good example (figure 1). In some cases the cropping was even more pronounced, leaving only a very small front fringe.

Cropped Hair

Before World War I cropped hair seems to have been the most common style worn with sailor suits, probably because the hair style was so popular. A very large percentage of Germany boys had cropped hair during the early 20th century when sailor suits were especially popular.

Curls

German boys were more noted for cropped hair and bangs than curls. We notice a few German boys wearing their sailor suits with curls. This was not one of the more common hair styles wirn with sailor suits. Nor do we nore nearly as many German boys wearing sailor suits with curls as in America and other countries. We do not see ringlet curls, but we have noted some shorter styles with curls. We do not have enough images here to be able to assess trends.

Combable Styles

We notice various other styles using parts, mostly relatively short hair styles.
