Austrian Sailor Suits: Components--Pants

Figure 1.-- This Innsbruck boy inna tender portrait with his mother looks to be about 6-7 years old. He wears a traditional sailor suit with three-stripe detailing and a striped dickey. He had whsat look like kniclers with his suit and long stockings. Note the soft cap he is holding. The portrait is undated, but looks like the 1900s to us.

We see Austrian boys wearing sailor suits with many different types of pants, including long pants, bloomer knickers, knee pants, and short pants. This varied over time. Age was not as an important factor for sailor suit pants as it was for other outfits. Long pants were common for sailor suits at a time when they were not so common for boys. This was because the sailor suit was meant to emulate naval uniforms. We also see knee pants and knickers. After World War I, short psnts become increasingly common. Our Austrian archive is fairly limited so we can not yet assess the realtive prominnce of various types of pants, but long pants were very common. We notice both white and dark pants. The white blouses could be worn with dark pant, but we don't see wjite pants being worn with dark blouses.

A reader writes, "Why do you think the short trousers are knickers rather than short pants. To me they look like short trousers. I am certain you are noticing something I am missing." This is why HBC prefers nice big images so wecan make out detail. Unless HBC has the photograph to scan, we have to rely on what readers send along. It is impossible to be really sure. But it looks to be that the hem of the pants is thicker and more pronounced than might be expected from plain knee pants. Also they do not lie down on the leg and you would expect knee pants."
