Sailor Suits: American Styles--Gender

Figure 1.--Here we see three Buffalo, New York children, presumably siblings. We think the two older children are girls wearing sailor dresses. The child in the middle looks to be their yonger sister, but could be a brother. The portrait is a RPPC print. We would guess it was taken any time during 1905-15.

The sailor suit was intially a boys style, a reproduction of naval uniform. It was created in England for the royal princes (1840s. It gradualy spread to America and other contries. As in England, it was initially a boys' style in America as well. Although the first sailor suit worn by Prince Bertie was a faithful replica of a the naval uniform worn by enlisted men in the Royal Navy, many variants gradually appeared. And in America the traditional uniform was similsr, largely because Royal Navy uniforms influenced the uniforms in other navies, including the U.S. Navy which greaty expanded during the Civil War (1860s). This was just as the style began to reach America. Eventually girls began wearing sailor outfits as well. We are still working out the chronology, but begin to see some girls' sailor dresses (1870s). We see both dresses with sailor styling and sailor blouses (called middy blouses) worn with skirts. The dresses were styled variously. Some had only a hint of sailor styling. Others had more obvious sailor styling and we note sone traditionally styled drresses. The sailot suits could be the same as the ones worn by boys, only with skirts substituted for pants. We note sailor outfits becoming much more popular for girls (1890s). We also note girls wearing middy blouses with bloomers for gym in high schools (1900s). Sailor outfits, both sailor-styled dresses and sailor suits were very popular for girls schoolwear in the first half of the 20th century. By this time only younger boys were wearing sailor outfits to school. We see teenage girls commonly wearing sailor-styled outfits to school, often with big hair bows rather than sailor hats. The garment included headwear (hats and caps), blouses, pants, kirts, and cdesses.

Boys

The sailor suit was intially a boys style, a reproduction of naval uniform. It was created in England for the royal princes (1840s. It gradualy spread to America and other contries. As in England, it was initially a boys' style in America as well. And in America the traditional uniform was similsr, largely because Royal Navy uniforms influenced the uniforms in other navies, including the U.S. Navy which greaty expanded during the Civil War (1860s). This was just as the style began to reach America. All kinds of different styles appeared. We even see sailor outfits dine with rulles and lace. The sailor suit became one of the most popular styles for boys in the 1890s nd 1900s. We see cartalogs with pages full of sailor outfits. Most middle-class boys had sailor outfits at the time. They were commonly worn to school, at least in the cities. The popularity began to decline as the stule became more popular for girls (1910s). AftercWorld War II we rarely see boys wearing sailor suits, except for very young pre-school boys. The garments included headwear (hats and caps), blouses, pants, skirts/kilts, dresses, and tunics.

Girls

The styling by the turn-of-the century was almost entirely very tradituonsl. By this time only younger boys were wearing sailor outfits to school. We see teenage girls commonly wearing sailor-styled outfits to school, often with big hair bows rather than sailor hats. The popularity has ince varied over time, but we still see girls with sailor styled dresses. The garments included headwear (hats and caps), blouses, kirts, and dresses. While younger boys wore skirted sailor outfits, girls did not wear psnts as part of sailor outfits.

Differentiation

Both boys and girls both wore sailor suits. And the styling was essentially the same, only the bottoms were different with the boys wearin pants and the girls skirts. The parents meaning mostly the mother had a basic choice. Outfit the hilden all in identical outfits are in differnt outfits. Some mothers chosen the identical approach, at least for age appropriate children. But for the most part most mothers chose sone degree of gender differentition. This could mean different styles or tye of sailor outfits or non-sailor outfits. We see this primarily on the late-19th or early-20th century when the sailor suit was at the heighth of its popularity. By the 1920s sailor suits were declining in popularity, at least for boys and we no longer see boys and girls in idenical or coordinated sailotsuit outfits to anyetet.
