Filmology

About a Boy is based on a book by Nick Hornby.

Cast

The film stars Hugh Grant who always seems to play the same character. Marcus is played by Nicholas Hoult who is especially accomplished in his part. A HBC reader reports, "English kids are just wonderful actors. 11 year old Nicholas Hoult is excellent as the quirky Marcus and when he has to sing if front of his entire school, his quavery treble is really realistic (and I've read that the boy is a fine singer, so this was another example of terrific natural acting)." Toni Collete is terrific as the boy's troubled mother and Rachel Weitz is also quite goos (and beautiful) as a woman who Grant's character falls in love with.

Plot

Will (Grant) is on his own and totally irresponsible. He has no interest in emotional attachments and stays at home all day long and watches TV. He has a few casual dates. He doesn't even have a job. He invents an imaginary son to help with his dating and decides to attend single parent meetings. He meets Marcus (Nicholas Hoult) a 12-year-old who is a little odd and is having difficulty at his school. They become friends. Will teaches Marcus how he can be a cool kid, which helps him at school. Marcus helps Will to grow up a bit.

Costuming

Marcus wears a school unifom with a maroon blazer and tie. The costuming looked pretty authentic for the uniforms although this kid has a 60's style haircut and wears wierd 80's type of clothes with a knit hat that kind of makes him look like a bird.

Assessment

This movie is a worthwhile pick. There were some funny parts and was gererally well acted--even touching at points. A HBC reader was especially impressed with it. "This is a flat-out wonderful, funny film with some suprise twists. The boy is excellent and it's one of Hugh Grant's best performances. Nicholas has two terrific scenes. There are also good performances from the supporting staff. Theere is a tearful scene involving the boy who plays Rachael Weitz's son Allie who has to apologise to Marcus for threatening him earlier. The boy is is very natural and his first scene with Marcus is very funny. Grant also has some effective scenes, especially when he "bails' Marcus out during the school concert scene. You don't see it coming and it's one of several pleasant suprises in this remarkable film."
