'The Book Thief' is best descrived as a internatiianl producron. It ws based on the 2005 novel by Australian-German author Markus Zusak and adapted by Michael Petroni an Australian screen writer. The film was mostly shot in Görlitz, Germany. There was ana American and German production company. It was shot in English and German. The book is historical fiction. It depicts a young girl beginning in the early NAZI era. She is living with her adoptive German family. Her Communist mother had to give her up. There are historical issues here. The film is set during the eraly-NAZI era, Children taken from their parents were usualy placed with poitically relaiable families. Liesel Meminger beautifully plays the titular 'book thief'. Her foster father is a very kind man. He teaches her to read and she falls in love with books. her first book is one scorched in a book burning. Liesel becomes friendly with Rudy Steiner, a neighbor, and joins the Hitler Youth, but quickly becomes disillusioned with NAZIs idea. The Mayor's wife see this and gives access to her libtary--also very unkilely in NAZI Germany. Liesel begins 'borrowing' books. Also not realistic, a the family was sheltering a Jewish man. The film has awonderful musical score by Oscar-winning composer John Williams.
