British actor Robert Donat was a film star appearing in many important post-World War II films in the 1950s. "The Cure for Love" was his only attempt to direct one of his films. He mist not not have liked directing as he never attempted another one. The film is based on a popular stage play by Walter Greenwood. Donat plays the main character, Jack, an army sergeant who returns home on leave. Jack has fallen in love and hopes that the girl proposed to before leaving home has forgotten his proposal. Of course as this is the main line of the film, she has not. The main gag line of the film is that a war hero like Jack is afraid of the young ladies he has become entangled with. The film is set in Lancashire and some of the dialog is a bit difficult for Ameicans to understand. A Lancashire reader writes, "Dust tha mean tha can't understand spoken words i'th film about t'Cure for Love?' Tha a'l have t larn ow t'speke Lancashire then tha 'll know wa'thactors ave sed'." Translation. You found the dialogue in the film " The Cure for Love difficult because it was spoken in an English regional dialect. There are dialect books on how Lancashire is spoken which might help you to enjoy these films. Historically our dialects can be traced back to the various people from Europe that settled in Britain and the birth of the English Language."
