Movie Review: Curly (U.S., 1947)

Figure 1.--"Curly" was Hal Roach's first attempt to reestablish this new Our Gang. It was not, however, a very original effort. He simply rewrote and expanded the 1930 "Our Gang" short--"Teacher's Pet." (Jackie Cooper and June Marlowe stared in the original.) Larry Olsen played Curly.

"Curly" is a not very original film about a mischievous boy and his friends. The film is set largely in school where they torment their teachers. This is a Hal Roach production. Roach bt this time had sold the rights to his "Our Gang" ("The Little Rascals"). So Roach set about to create a new, updated Our Gang. The new name was "Curley and his Gang". This was not one of the low-budget Our Gang films, but a feature-length films shot in Cinecolor. "Curly" was his first attempt to reestablish this new Our Gang. It was not, however, a very original effort. He simply rewrote and expanded the 1930 "Our Gang" short--"Teacher's Pet." (Jackie Cooper and June Marlowe stared in the original.) The film is shot around the fact that Curly (Larry Olsen) and his friends are upset because the teacher they really liked married and left town. This rather dates the film because by 1947, teachers no longer had to retire when they married. They are concerned who will replacement her. Curley makes a bog mistake. He eroniously concludes the sowerpus aunt (Kathleen Howard) of the actual replacement (Frances Rafferty) will be their new teacher. So curly and the other kids plot how to get rid of her. But then the new teacher turns out not only to be very nice, but young and pretty as we.
