Hitlerjunge Quex: Clothing

Figure 1.--Most of the stills I have noted show the Hitler Youth uniforms, however, the film also showcases what German boys were wearing in the early 1930s. We see German boys in their regular clothes being recruited into the Hitler Youth. The boys wear a variety of clothes including plus fours and short trousers with long stockings. The boy on the left wears short pants and black long stockings. Notice also the cap.

"Hitlerjunge Quex" provides a lot of interesting information about both German boys' clothing and the the Hitler Youth uniform in the early years of Third Reich and how it was worn. The Hitler Youth was originally organized as the youth auxilary of the Storm Troopers (S.A.). The S.A. were the NAZI Party toughs that teorrized the streets before the Party seized power and NAZI opponents in the first few years of NAZI rule. Most of the stills I have noted show the Hitler Youth uniforms, however, the film also showcases what German boys were wearing in the early 1930s. We see German boys in their regular clothes being recruited into the Hitler Youth. The Hitler Youth uniform was based on the S.A. uniform. Many of the S.A. toughs objected to this as they didn't like children being allowed to wear a uniform that they saw as a military uniform that they wore to remake Germany and teorrize their oponents with. Like wise, many German parents at first didn't want their children wearing a uniform that made them look like litte SA men.

Hitler Youth Uniforms

Substantial attention is given to the Hitler Youth uniform. The boys wear the old style cap. I don't remember seeing this cap much after 1934. Boys all wear the brown shirts. Some wear the belt with a shoulder strap. All the boys wear kerchiefs. The Hitler Youth uniform, is a military styled Scout uniform. (The Hitler Youth were originally organized as the youth auxilary of the S.A.) Actually it was modeled on the brown-shirted uniform of the S.A.--the para-military Storm Troopers. The basic elements, long sleeved shirt, short pants, and knee socks, resemble everyday clothes for European and British boys of this generation, with some modifications for rugged outdoor wear. And I say militarized, because the NAZIs clearly intended to indoctrinate and train the young for the conflict that engulfed Europe in 1939-45.

Communist Youth Uniforms

I'm not sure just what the communist youth wear, but it was not a smart uniform like the Hitler Youth had.
