Král sokolu (Czech Republic, 2000)

Figure 1.--Here Thomas is with his falcon in the 2000 Czech film "Král sokolu". Falconing was a major sport for the elite in the Medieval era. Click on the image for another scene from the film.

This is a Czech movie "Král sokolu" (Thomas the Falconer), released in 2000. It takes place in what is now Czechoslovakia (one might guess Bohemia) during the Middle Ages. Orphan Thomas is able to understand the language of animals. Arriving a castle as a petitioner, this enables him to help the falconer who lost his job, and of course to save a beautiful princess, his first love. I have not seen the film, but an Austrain reader speaks very highly of it. HBC has not yet seen the film. Hopefully our readers will provide more information. The German title is " Falkner Thomas ". The Czech Republic is a small country. Making films for such a small market would limit production. German and other European movie goers are more accustomed to viewing foreign-language films than Americans. A German reader tell us that films like this are dubbed into German rather than using suntitles.
