Lassie Come Home: Costuming--Hosiery

Figure 1.--Here we see the suspenders that Joe wore in a scene at home. The home looks a bit affluent for a family of modest means like Joe's family.

Joe and all the other boys wear kneesocks, in both the winter and summer scenes. The kneesocks are dark colors and it is not easy to make out the color. The girls are shown wearing dark long stockings in the Winter scenes and white socks in the summer scenes. This seems reasonably accurate. I'm not sure how common the long stockings were for girls, but most phiotographs we have seen from the q1930s do show English boys wearing kneesocks, although we hasve seen ankle sicks in the Summer. Perhaos thast was not as common in Yorkshire. Joe's knee socks were wollen grey turn-over-top socks. They are store-brought socks. We imagine that in Yorkshore thast many boys wouls have wirn socks knitted by mother or granny. They would not have had elastised tops so he must have worn garters to keep them up. Except when riding the bike, his socks always appear to be fully pulled up. The garter round the top on the inside and the sock top is folded over so it can't be seen.
