Lassie Come Home: Costuming--Overcoats

Figure 1.--The boys, but not the girls, are shown wearing heavy wool full-length overcoats during the Winter scenes. We do note that gaberdine overcoats were common at many private schools. We are not at all sure that heavy wool overcoats were commonly worn by English school boys, especially boys in state schools.

The boys, but not the girls, are shown wearing heavy wool full-length overcoats during the Winter scenes. A reader writes, "Lassie gets back in Autumn. Joe has an overcoat so do all the other boys. All bought from the same shop, mail order catolgue and I expect the parents were paying the cost off in weekly instalments."We do note that gaberdine overcoats were common at many private schools. We are not at all sure that heavy wool overcoats were commonly worn by English school boys, especially boys in state schools. Nor do we know if overcoats were more common in Yorkshire than in other areas. Here a variety of factors are involved. Overcoats are a relatively expensive garment. Also the English climate is not that severe that wool overcoats are needed for warmth. A greater problem is rain. A reader writes, "The other children look affluent. This does not seem quite right as many of their fathers would have been out of work when the local pit (mine) closed down. Strange that the boys are well clothesd for the winter but the girls overcoats are only three quarter coats."
