Joe's costume in the film is a short pants suit as a boy from a modest family might have worn to school. This looks similar to the suits we see many British boys wearing to school in the 1930s. He wore the suit to school and as everyday wear. Here we see him arriving home from school (figure 1). Note that it is not an affluently tailored expensive suit, but rather common looking. There is no fancy school tie or school badge on the pocket. He wears his suit with a maroon sweater. Even so, just the mere look of the suit with it's suggested formality, give him a well dressed "proper gentleman" look to an American viewer. Joe's suit is a brown patterned wool. A reader notes, "It is certainly a hard wearing suit. He wore it every day for over a year and it was still as good as new 18 months later when Lassie returned!"
