Lassie Come Home: Costuming--Sweater/Jersey

Figure 1.--Sweaters were and still are popular garments in England. We note Joe wearing a maroon sweater with his suit. I think that this an accurate depiction. English readers might call it a jersey. Click on the image to see Joe with lassie and a better view of the sweater.

Sweaters were and still are popular garments in England. We note Joe wearing a maroon sweater with his suit. I think that this an accurate depiction. We see this quite a bit in England, especially after World War I. I'm less sure about the color. Note that Joe is always shown wearing his jacket over his sweater. We never see him and the other boys just wearing sweaters. I am not entirely sure how accurate this is. We do not many imafges of Englisgh boys wearing suit jackets in the 1930s. After World war II, images of boys wearing seaters without suit jackets are much more common. English readers might call his weater a jersey. Joe wore the same suit maroon sweater for much of the film. The hole seems to have been there from start to finish. Ofcourse this hole was no accidebnt. This was an important film, and considerable attention was given to costuming. Presumably a hole was added to Joe's sweater to stress that he came from a humble family. One reader suggests this was an error in the costuming. A reader writes, "Note the hole in Joe's red jersey. This isn't very realistic. No decent Yorkshire mum - no matter how poor would have let her boy go to school with a hole in his jersey!"
