Movie Review: Nico and Dani (Spain, 2001)

Figure 1.--

If you liked "The Last American Virgin", you'd like this film, though their themes are very different. It's a coming of age film, similar to "Last American Virgin", with one profound exception. "N and D" is a story of two 17 years old guys who've been friends for some time, though they live in different cities. Nico arrives by train for a summer visit to Dani, expecting that they will do some girl watching and, eventually, find romance. The set-up seems perfect; Dani's parents are away on vacation, and the boys have the house to themselves. The only other visitor is Dani's English language tutor. She lives near Dani's house and gives him lessons at his home. Dani also has romance in mind, but with Nico, not a girl friend! The film only suggests any love-making among the characters. There is some language not suitable for every audience, but overall the film has a sweet quality mixed with lots of fun.

Cast

Plot

"Nice and Dani" is a coming of age film, similar to "Last American Virgin", with one profound exception. Nico arrives at Dani's house obsessed with his budding sexuality, especially his Adam's apple, and he's determined to lose his virginity. Dani, on the other hand, has eyes only for Nico, a secret he hasn't shared with him. Nico and Dani are friends with Berta and Elena, sisters who appear to fit well into Nico's plans. When Nico invites them to a party at Dani's house, Dani is distressed. This doesn't fit into his plans at all! At the party Dani slips his father's Viagra into the girls' drinks. One of the girls becomes a bit sick, and her sister takes her home. That night, alone with each other, Dani explains his feelings to Nico. Nico's reaction is puzzlement. He pursues Berta while Dani, his summer hopes dimmed, moaps and looks for comfort with a family friend. In the end Nico and Dani reaffirm their friendship for each other. They respect each other and their differences. Both are confident they will find the lover they're looking for. Near the film's end when Nico and Dani have sorted out the complexities of their friendship, they go off to the countryside to hunt rabbits. The boys were fond of hunting, and, certain tensions now relaxed, they shared a happy afternoon. The film pauses in various stills that reflect their good spirits and friendship.

Costuming

Nico and Dani wore casual clothes throughout the film. They favored T shirts or short sleeved pullover shirts and either jeans or fashionably long shorts with casual shoes. Fernando Ramallo played Dani, and Jordi Vilches played Nico. Both actors were about 20 when the film was made, but their characters were about 16/17. They played their roles superbly with sensitivity and sincerity for an uncommon storyline.
