Filmography

Nico the Unicorn is a Canadian American production made in about 1999. Its a production by Graeme Campel with a superb music score by Alan Reeves.

Cast

Kevin Zegars plays the roll of Billy as a sensitive boy who has an insightful understanding of the towns hostile children. Hee is 13 years old and crippled. It is an endearing movie with Kevin Zegars playing the role quiet well.

Plot

Billy walks with a bad limp. He comes from the city, but with the passing away of his father, his mother and himself have moved into a rustic village and stay in an old house. Billy has to start at a new school in the village and it does not go well. Due to his bad limp and that he is from the city, he is not well recieved by some of the school children. In the beginning of the film he is asked mockingly by the local bully if he would like to join in on a game of baseball. On second thoughts he gamely tries but due to his limp, he stumbles and falls when trying to do a home run. Later on when playing pinball at a cafe, the bully and his friends tease him about his disability ('the gimp').

One day on returning from school, Billy sees there is a passing circus freak show in town. Out of curiosity he visits the tent and comes across a mare that looks like the fabled unicorn. With the pocket money his mother has given him he buys it from the cruel owner of the circus. With the help of a girl friend who likes him (she belongs to the local bully's gang and scorns there attitude towards billy), the horse is taken home and lovingly cared for.

Later they discover that the horse is pregnant and with the help of tatty textbook, they deliver a calf that later grows up very quickly. Furthermore the horse grows a sharp horn on it's forehead just like that of a unicorn and it becomes apparent it has magical powers.

Against Billy's wish, the neighborhood kids find out about the uncorn and somewhat invade his house and take pictures of the horse to sell to local newspaper for a large reward. Billy is against this happening and decides to flee to the mountains with the unicorn. This is dramatically done by shedding his leg brace, climbing onto the horse and fleeing.

In the mountains (with the local towns's inhabitants and police in pursuit), the unicorn jumps across huge chasm and into a mystical place. Here the unicorn takes him to a magical garden where Billy discovers his leg is healed. Jubilant Billy runs back to the search party where he is well recieved. The unicorn does not come back.

Production

Whilst this is not a cinema circuit movie, it has a lot of appeal. Though the subplots and story is not always credible, it is technically well produced. The camera, lighting and editing is excellent.

Costuming

Billy's wardrobe was essentially standerd and the continuity was well done. He wore a well worn pair of jeans and standerd chain store type of shirts. In the scene where they calf the unicorn, he wears a tight fitting pair of jeans and a typical American red checked shirt. His dark features, black hair with a middle part compleminted his clothes. The bully and his gang clothes are typical of a young teens dress. There wear is sloppy and with their gum chewing, they come across as typical rebellious teenagers.
