' Obecná skola ' or ' Primary School is a film made in Czecheslovakia and released in 1991. We do not know a great deal about the film. The setting is a small Czechoslovakian village around 1945-46. Here 10-year-old Eda (Vaclav Jakoubec) and his friend Tonda (Radoslav Budac) attend a primary scholl. The class is very boisterous and unruly, almost wild in fact. Their kind-hearted teacher, unable to discipline them, quits his job in frustration. He is replaced by the much sterner Igor Hnidzo. While very stern, he is also fair with the boys. And the boy are impressed with his more forceful duspline along wuth his uniform and gun. The Czech Army had been disbanded by the NAZIs somI guess he was in the resistance. His weakness appears to be that he has an eye for the ladies. The costuming seems realtively accurate, but we don't remember cuffed shirts being worn in the 1940s. Hopefully our Czech readers will provide us more information about the film. It is seen as one of the most imprtant Czech films. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1991. Some reviewrs have compared this film to the Swedish film, 'My life as a dog' by Lasse Hallström.
