The Pied Piper: Costuming

Figure 1.--Roddy begins the film as an English boy in short pants and kneesocks. Here Roddy speaks to Mr. Howard. Dad caught five large fish.

Roddy begins the film as an English boy in short pants and kneesocks, if my memory serves me correcrly. It has been some time since I have seen the film. The other children are variously dressed. There are three girls and 3 boys. Ronnie, Peirre and Willem Sheila, Rose and Anna Roddy dons French clothes, a smock and beret, to blend in better after they are overrun by the Germans. The As Roddy was 13 or 14, you wonder if he didn't object to the juvenile costumes, especially as he had been living in America. On his web page maintained by his fan club he does eventually complain about wearing short trousers in his films. Certainly after turning 16. However in England at this time it was not uncommon for 13 to 14 year olds to wear short trousers. The coming of age was starting work and wearing longs. He plays a boy age about 11 in the film.
