Movie Depictions of Boys Clothes: Philipp der Kline (East Germany (197?)

Figure 1.--The colorful "T"shirts that these East German boys wear look quite similar to the clothes worn by West German and America boys.

I do not have a lot of information on this film. It is a German film, but few other details are avialble. HBC's German film consultant believes that it is probably East German probably shot in the mid-1970s. The film is called Philipp der Kleine. Philipp the Small. It is about a kid who's small for his age, and this really bugs him. He ends up with a magic flute and every time he plays it things around him get bigger (including his cat which turns into a lion cub and goes to school with him!) Some scenes demonstrate that even kids walking past in the background are wearing the same style of clothes as the kids in the flim. Some of the images are a bit fuzzy, but there's an awful lot of long patterned and stripey socks in this film and they're wearinig them.

Filmography

I do not have a lot of information on this film.

Identification

This is a German film, but few other details are avialble. HBC's German film consultant believes that it is probably East German probably shot in the mid-1970s. The street photographs sshowing the notorious East German Trebants ("Trebbies") help to confirm that it is a East German film.

Story

The film is called Philipp der Kleine. Philipp the Small. It is about a kid who's small for his age, and this really bugs him. He ends up with a magic flute and every time he plays it things around him get bigger (including his cat which turns into a lion cub and goes to school with him!)

Clothing

Some scenes demonstrate that even kids walking past in the background are wearing the same style of clothes as the kids in the flim. Some of the images are a bit fuzzy, but there's an awful lot of long patterned and stripey socks in this film and they're wearinig them. Alot of the film appears to take place in or around school. The children do not wear uniforms and schoolwear appears quite informal.

Garments

Some of the gaments that the children are wearing include:

Caps

The children in the film do not wear caps. They have apparently gone out of style. Note in old photographs that Germany boys commonly wore caps. By the 1970s, however, this appears to have ca\hanged.

Figure 3.--Notice the suspenders the boy in the front is wearing.

Shirts

Many boys on warm weather appear to wear colorful "T" shirts. These seem quite similar to the shirts worn by boys in West Germany and America. Boys also wear collared shirts, both solid colors and patterns.

Jackets

The moviee appeaars to be sse on some warm weather. Idon't see any jacjkets.

Sweaters

One boy wers a sleevless jackets.

Pants

Most of the boys wear short pants of various types. The short cut of thec shorts helps to date the film to the 1970s. The main character \, Philipp, wears lederhosen with the fancy leather suspenders.

Hosiery

Several boys wear kneesocks. I see both grey and white solid colored kneesocks. Many boys also wear ankle socks.

Figure 4.--Ohilipp in this scene wears lederhosen with a white shirt and white kneesocks.

Shoes

I can't yet determine this with the available iimnages.
