Tomorrow the World: Costuming--Emil's Long Pants Suit

Figure 1.-- Emil after he has begun to dress like American boys wears a long trouser suit and other long trouser outfits. The American jacket and long trousers worn with a white open-necked shirt do seem more in keeping with actual clothing styles of the 1940s in America, although Emil, even when he is dressed like an American boy, seems to dress a bit more formally than his fellow students in school.

Of course the exaggerated formality is part of characterization of Emil, who is portrayed as much more rigid in every way than his American coeqals. It also seems an accurate depiction as German boys at the time did dress somewhat more formally at school than more casual American boys.
