East German Movie Depictions of Boys Clothes: Trompeton--Anton (1970s?)

Trompeton--Anton
Figure 1.--Anton is shown here with his magical trumpet. Note the short shorts. He wears colored ankle sicks matching his shirt and open toed sandals.

HBC believes this translates as Anton the Trumpeter. This film is similar to many films that hat were produced in Germany and other Eastern European countries during the 1970s and 80s. This particular film is from East Germany. It's about a boy who has a magic trumpet. The neighbours can't stand the noise when he plays and he wanders all over the place trying to find somewhere to practice, upsetting everyone in the vicinty and causing strange things to happen. There's one scene in the film where the boy wears jeans. In the rest of the film he and his friends appear in a variety of styles of short pants. Ledehosen crop up a couple of times, but may not be recognisable as such because they are so short, at was common across Europe in the 19 70s and early 80s.

Story

It's about a boy who has a magic trumpet. The neighbours can't stand the noise when he plays and he wanders all over the place trying to find somewhere to practice, upsetting everyone in the vicinty and causing strange things to happen.

Clothing

This film is similar to many films that hat were produced in Germany and other Eastern European countries during the 1970s and 80s.

Garments

This particular film is from East Germany. There's one scene in the film where the boy wears jeans. In the rest of the film he and his friends appear in a variety of styles of short pants. Ledehosen crop up a couple of times, but may not be recognisable as such because they are so short, as was common across Europe in the 1970s and early 80s.

Figure 2.--Notice all the differebt styles of clothing here. One boy even wears a baseball camp, although the brim is much larger than worn by American boys.

Caps

I have not noted a lot of boys wearing caps in East German films. Berets are notably absent. Surprisingly, one style seen in the 1970s is a baseball-style cap, but with an unsually large peak or bill.

Jackets

Many boys can be seen wearing informal, light weight jackets.

Shirts

East German boys are depicted as wearing a wide variety of shirts. "T"-shirts were very popular for summer wear. Many are bright collars or striped. Some have Rugby collars. A wide variety of collar shirts were worn in many different colors and patterns.

Pants

Knickers were still worn in the 1940s, but little seen by the 1950s. Many boys wore short pants, even older boys in the 1940s and early 1950s. By the 1960s they become more for younger boys and worn during the summer. Long boys become more common in the 1970s and even jeans can be seen in the 1980s. The boys that do wear short pants in the 1970s and 80s wear quite short cut shorts. Lederhosen are often seen. Particularly short lederhosen were worn in the 1970s and 80s.

Figure 3.--These boys wear patterned kneesocks and lederhosen.

Hosiery

Knee socks are common in the 1940s and 50s. Many boys wear quite elaborately patterned knee socks. While knee socks become less common in the 1970s they never entirely disappear. In one scene the mother has chosen the same patterned knee socks for her son, but in different colors. Some younger boys wear tights in the winter. Most boys during the summer wear ankle socks. The ankle socks appear to be mostly colored. Odten the color chosen matches the shirt or or the shorts.

Shoes

Most boys wear leather shoes. Some boys wear sandals, mostly open toe styles. They are almost always worn with socks, almost always ankle socks. Sneakers are not commonly seen until the mid-1970s.
