Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) is best known as one of the great Russian novelists. Tolstoy lost his mother and other close family memmbers at an early age. This undoubtedly affected his outlook on life and his future writings which often focus on death and the darker side of life. His greatest work was of course War and Peace. He also wrote some plays. One of those was "And in the Darkness the Light Shines". We know little about the play. We are not sure yet when it was written and firtstperformed. Nor do we know the plot. Two plays written by Tolstoy: "Zhivoi Trup" (1911; The Living Corpse, 1911, also known as The Man Who Was Dead) and "Vlast Tmy" (1912; The Dominion of Darkness, 1890, better known as The Power of Darkness). We note a performance of the play in 1999 staged in the world-renowned Moscow Academical Art Theater (founded by famous K. S. Stanislavskiy in 1898). The producer was V. V. Dolgatchev. Sevral children are involved in theplay. They are costumedin what looks to be turn of the 20th century styles. Two boys werjickers, one with a sailor suit. Another boy wears a Russian blouse tunic.
