School Hair Cuts: Styles

school hair syles
Figure 1.--We do not see any specific school hair styles, although closely cropped hair in Eastern Europe and Japan might be called a school style. Here we a Soviet school group, we think in the early-1950s. The fact that they all have closely cropped hair means that it is a scgool rule, not a popuolar style. This may be a Pioneer Group (a school based youth group) becaise Soviet scgools were coeducational.

We do not see any specific school hair styles, although closely cropped hair in Eastern Europe and Japan might be called a school style. School photographs just provide us excellent examples of popular styles. And because the school portait became a widely popular convention, there is an enormous photographic record for us to study. While exceopt for shved heads there were no actual school styles, many schools had guidelines and rules, usually on length not styles. Mandating a style was difficult if not impossible because of all the different types of hair--unless you just crop it all off. And this varied from country to country. Not all children had the type of hair needed for many styles. Cropped hair for boys was not the only style we see commonly at schools. Another style was the short back and sides which was something of a standard boys' styles during the 20th century until the 1970s. Another popular style that was very common is bangs. We see most Japanese girls in and some other Asian countries wore bangs. Bangs were also popular for boys, especially in Japan and the Soviet Union. We have seen school hair styles from close cropped hair to long shoulder-length. The cropped styles were popular for many countries, for an extended period. The long hair was more limited, but was popular in America and Western Europe during the 1970s.
