The French Huguenots: Early Emigration

Figure 1.--This psainting depicts 'Emigration of the Huguenots - 1566' painted by Jan Antoon Neuhuys, a Dutch history and genre painter. He painted it in 1891. We see the French Protestants (Huguenots) fleeing religious persecution in France during during an early phase of the Prorestabnr Reformation in France/French Religious Wars. The Huguenots sought refuge in countries like England, Germany, the Netherlands, South Africa, and Switzerland. France was at the time the most advanced country in Europe. The Huguenots carried with them advanced skills and technologies.

The violence caused some Huguenots to flee. The violence engulfed France. This mean beating, torture, mutilation, and murders. This included some major out breaks od violence that were widely reported. Terrifying many. Many other smaller actions were never reported. Huguenots began leaving France. As the repression varied over time, so did the number of Huguenots fleeing. As did the course of the fighting.as the Huguenots gained and lost territory. This could have serious consequences. And it was not a matter of fleeing if a town was captured by the Catholics. The Catholics wee not interested in driving Protestants out of France. They wanted them to convert. Thus if a town was captured, Huguenots could not easily flee. In Huguenot dominated towns, people were generally free to flee (figure v1). And as the Reformation spread there were increasing numbers of Protestant countries in northern Europe that were willing to accept Huguenots. This was the first circumstance when we begin to see refugees in Europe. Only with moving to a Protestant country were French people safe from potentially horrific persecution. Once all accommodation ended with the Huguenots (17th century), it became very difficult to emigrate, Individuals might get away, but families emigrating were difficult because this made it obvious that religion was involved.
