Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: Frederick W. Watts (England, 1817-1904)

Frederick W. Watts
Figure 1.--Here in this Watts portrait we see the Tennyson boys as teenagers in 1865. They were still being dressed the same as when they were youinger. We think trhat they were still wearing tunics, but there is no way of confirming this.

Watts became a leading portraitist, painting many of the worthies of the time. We do not know, however, just who the boy in the painting here is (figure 1). The painting here may have been a detail used for one of his allegories, rather than an actual portrait. We note a portrait of Hallam and Lionel Tennyson, the two sons of the famous Victorian poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1865). We note a photograhic portrait with the same elaborate collar taken a few years earlier. Unfortunately except foir the long hair and lace collar, we can't tell muvh about their clothing. They are proabably wearing tunics. The blue-green color is not a shade we have noticed before in the 19th century.
