John Edgar Williams Work: The Young Microscopists (1857)

 John Edgar Williams

Figure 1.--Williams painted the three Izod children playing with a microscope (1857). They are Frank, Harry and Arthur Izod Richards, aged 5, 8, and 10 years old (1857). We know nothing about the Izod fmily. The books suggest a scholarly bent. The 19th century was when the scientific advances og the 17th and 18th cedntuy really led to huge advances. The fact that children, albit well to do ones, now could have microscope tells you how the technology had advanced.

Williams' work seems to have improved. We are not sure why. Another much more impressive work is 'The young Microscopists', a portrait of Frank, Harry and Arthur Izod Richards, aged 5, 8, and 10 years old (1857). We know nothing about the Izod family. The boys are playing with a microscope. The microscope was invented in the late-16th century. This led to some actual scientific discoveries (18th century), but it was not until the next century that huge advances were made (19th century). By that time. science began to come into its own when countless important discoveries occurred. Microscopes by the end of the century were so common that even children had access to them.
