Figure 1.-- This portrait was taken at a Montreal studio on July 12, 1898, and shows the Armstrong children (brother and sister) at about 9 years of age (the brother) and 8 years (the sister). We don't know the Christian names of the children. Notice the boy's Eton collar and bow. The white apparently starched dress of the girl with puffed sleeves and ruffled collar seems to be very dressy. Notice that both are wearing black long stockings and similar low-cut shoes.

The Armstrong Children (Canada, 1898)

This portrait was taken at a Montreal studio on July 12, 1898, and shows the Armstrong children (brother and sister) at about 9 years of age (the brother) and 8 years (the sister). We don't know the Christian names of the children. The white apparently starched dress of the girl with puffed sleeves and ruffled collar seems to be very dressy. She wears a matching white hair bow. It is done with a band and very small bow, a style that we have not commonly noted. The boy wears an interesting single-breasted cut-away jacket with light-colored piping on the front opening and around the breast and side pockets. The buttons seem to be cloth-covered. The buttons on the jacket match the ornamental buttons on the knee pants. The boy wears a stiffly starched white Eton collar We can't see the tips (points) of the collar. The collar without rounded points may have had a different name. HBC believes that it was in all probability an Eton collar with sharp points. In any case he wears a fancy checked or plaid silk flopy bow. His short hair cut has a left part. Notice that his white shirt cuffs show at the wrists. The black stockings and low cut leather shoes with ties seem quite typical. Both children wear black long stockings. Even the girl with her emaculate white dress wears black stockings. This shows how common black stockings were at the turn-of-the 20th century. They seem to be wearing the same style of low-cut shoes. The girl does not seem especially pleased with the photographer who is posing the children. Her brother seems a bit more resigned to the ordeal.
