Individual Biographies: Dan Bescoter (United States, 1903-14)

Figure 1.--This family snapshot was labeled, 'Dan on Carl's 7 birthday.' Dan looks to be about 3 years old. That means it would have been taken about 1906-08, depending on how accurately we have estimated Dan's age in the 1914 portrait. Here he wears a simple button-on sjort pants outfit with three-quarter socks and sandals.

We note a series of photgraphs of Dan Bescoter who had younger and older brothers. We believe he was born about 1903, but we have no further information about Dan or his family. The boys were very close in age. We see Dan at about 3 years old wearing a button-on short pants outfit with three-quarter socks and sandals. Perhaps 2 years later we see all three boys playing in their back yard. They seem to live in a small town, but as the boys all hve trikes, we suspect that they were a comfortable middle class family. The younger boys, including little brother Bob, wear shorts and three-quarter socks while their older brother Carl wears knickers and long stockings. Finally we see Dan in studio portrait done as a cabinet card. Dan is wearing a flat cap and double-breasted knickes suit in 1914. The flat cap may match, but we are not sure. The long stockings do seem to match.

The Family

We note a series of photgraphs of Dan Bescoter who had younger and older brothers. We believe he was born about 1903, but we have no further information about Dan or his family. The boys were very close in age.

Button-on Shorts

We see Dan at about 3 years old wearing a button-on short pants outfit with three-quarter socks and sandals. Dan hs colorful striped socks. This does not seem all that common in the 1900s. We see more children with white socks or white socks with very narrow stripes. He also is wearing 'T'-strap sandls. This is one of the earliest examples of sandals which we have archived on HBC. Depending on the accuracy of our age estimate for Daniel in the studio portrait, this would have been taken about 1906-08. It is interesting that this does not seem to be a trendy family in a fashionable big city. Perhaps they were purchased from a popular mail-order catalog. The image is also interesting because it was an early example of amateur photography and the snapshot which very rapidly became an accepted institution after the appearance of the Kodak Brownie in 1900. We are not sure where the photograoph was taken. Clearly out in the country somewhere. Perhaps they were having aicnic birthday party.

Boys Playing

Perhaps 2 years later we see all three boys playing in their back yard. Presumably dad has them all posed for a photograph. They seem to live in a small town, but as the boys all have trikes, we suspect that they were a comfortable middle class family. Notice that the trikes have metal wheels. Apparently rubber wheels appeared on bikes before trikes. We are not sure just why that was. The younger boys, including little brother Bob, wear shorts and three-quarter socks while their older brother Carl wears knickers and long stockings. The difference is probably that Carl had begun school by the time this photograph was taken.

Portrait

Finally we see Dan in a portrait done as a cabinet card. It is not a studio portrait. It was taken outdoors in a city somewhere. It is well posed, suggesting that a professional photographer took it, even though it was not taken in a studio. We do not know if a professional photographer was working outdoors or if Dan's parents took the photograopher and a studio mount it as a cabinet card. Dan is wearing a flat cap and double-breasted knickers suit in 1914. Note the narrow tie and collar. This is the only one of the photographs with a definitivve date. Thus it can be used to date the other photographs. The flat cap may match, but we are not sure. Notice the high-top shoes. The long stockings do seem to match. The portrait is a cabinet card showing that the format was still being made in the 1910s and an example of the style.
