Billy Blaisdell: Juvenile Clothing

Figure 1.--We see Billy in a variety of outfits and over several different years. We see him wearing a Fauntleroy outfit. He klooks to be about 4-yearsold. The Fauntleroy suit at the time was going out of style for boys. The one Billy wears is not a classic Fauntleroy suit, but a velvet outfit tht is a liitle difficult to describe, but has Fauntleroy elements like a lace collar. It looks like a one-piece suit, but we can't be sure.

A photo album provides images of the vatious outfits and har styles that a younger boy would have worn in the 1910s. We see Billy in a variety of outfits and over several different years. We see him as a baby. One infant portrait shows him wearing a romper suit. Then we see him wearing rompers, a Fauntleroy outfit, and a sailor outfit. Another outfit looks like a sailor-styled tunic suit. Here he looks about 5-years of age and his curls have been cut. These are all outfits that a boy from an affluent family would have worn. They suggest a degree of affluence. The dealer seems to think that the album clearly were intended as a modeling book to be shown for bookings and work. Note the one photo with the Gustav Stickley child's chair and table. We are not entirely sure about this. The images look like perfectly normal images of a boy from an affluent family at the time. And they are at an age at which a child would not have been capable of theatrics.

Baby Portrait

We see Billy him as a baby.

Romper Suit

One infant portrait shows Billy Blaisdell wearing a romper suit. This becanme a popular style for younger children. It was primarily as is the case here a plasy suit rather than dress up clothing. It is a voluminous suit that we see Anerican children wearing at the time. The detailing looks rather like a Russian blouse detailing. His hair is not yet long enough to be done in ringlet curls. He looks to be about 1 years old, but not yet 2 years.

Fauntleroy Suit

The Fauntleroy suit at the time was going out of style for boys. The one Billy wears is not a classic Fauntleroy suit, but a velvet outfit that is a liitle difficult to describe (figure 1). It has has Fauntleroy elements like a lace collar. It looks like a one-piece suit, but we can't be sure. A one-piece outfit would make it rather kike a dressy romper suit. There are some sailor elements like a dickey with a nautuical emblem. He has long hair with some large ringlets. He looks to be about 4 years old here.

Sailor Outfit

Another outfit looks like a sailor-styled tunic suit. As was common it has long skeeves. This is a beautifuklly posed portrait of him reading a book. We can't tell the type of book, but there are pictures. It is a white suit, but the sailor collar and back flap as well as the wide built have been done in a color for contrast, probanly blue. The matching pants are straight-leg shorts. Here he looks to be about 5-years of age and his curls have been cut, but he has natural curls.
