*** Crown family Harold Crown

Figure 1.-- A portrait of Harold in 1913 shows him wearing his Confirmation suit. It is a dark Norfol style suit with knickers. As was still common at the time, Harold wears black long stockings. He seems to be about 13 or 14 years old. We do know that the family was Catholic.

Harold Crown (United States, 1899-19??)

Harold was the oldest brother. He was born April 1899 and died in March 1982. The three older brothers were born fairly close to each other and thus presumably were very close as boys . We suspect that they were as a result dressed similarly. Thus as a younger boy, Harold was probably outfitted in dresses much like the portrait of Richard on the main Crown family page. We do know that the family was Catholic. A portrait of Harold in 1913 shows him wearing his Confirmation suit. Or is the suit for First Communion. We are not sure about these early portraits. Harold seems to be about 13 or 14 years old. Harold wears a dark Norfol style suit with knickers. As was still common at the time, Harold wears black long stockings. A reader writes, "You speculate that Harold might be wearing a first communion outfit rather than be dressed for confirmation. But first communion in the Catholic Church almost always occurred much earlier, when a boy was 9 or 10 (or sometimes even earlier). Harold seems to be about 15. Confirmation was normally a middle teenage event." Here our reader is probably right. The age for First Communion has, however, varied over time and among countries. We note younger children doing First Communion in the 1920s. We are less sure about the era before World War I. We have collected some accounts of First Communion in America. Readers may also want to look at what we have collected on Confirmation in America.
