Australian Boys' Hair Styles: Ringlet Curls

Figure 1.--This unhappy looking Australian boy wear ringlet curls with what appears to be front buttoning belted-dress with Fauntleroy styling. The front of the hair was not done in bangs as was common in America. Note the cap on the ground to his right. Strangely for such a formal outfit, the boy looks to be in the middle of a forest with his tricycle. The portrait is dated only to the 1890s by museum curators. We think the turn-od-the 20th century may be a better estimate. The image is from the collection of the National Archive of Australia (an2477079-v). Click on the image for a fuller assessment of the boys' outfit.

Australian boys have generally worn short hair cuts. The styles appear to be similar to those in England. Fashions followed English styls and so did hair styles. Our archive of Australian images is fairly limited and we can not yet make a detailed assessment of Australian hair styles. We have, however, began to develop some information. While we notice boys primarily with short hair, we have found some mostly younger boys wearing short hair. We note that a few Australian boys in the late 19th and very early 20th century with long hair, as was the fashion in England. We note one Australian boy wearing ringlet curls. More commonly the long hair was not done in ringlets. Some Australian boys wore ringlets curls, presumably following English styles. Australian Fashion trends until after World War II were mostly set in Britain. We have no idea how common this was in Australia. We do not think it was very common. We have found a few examples in the photogrphic record. But our Australian archive is limited so we can not yet assess prevalence. This unhappy looking Australian boy wear ringlet curls with what appears to be a front-buttoning belted-dress with Fauntleroy styling. The front of the hair was not done in bangs as was common in America. There seem to be two top olls in addition to the nglets. Note the cap on the ground to his right. Strangely for such a formal outfit, the boy looks to be in the middle of a forest with his tricycle. The portrait is dated to the the 1890s by museum curators. We think the turn-of-the 20th century may be a better estimate (figure 1). We notice another Australian boy with ringlets about 1905-0. He was wearing aailor tunic outfit.
