Danish Boys' Garments: Neckwear

Danish boys neckwear
Figure 1.--Here we see two Danish brothers dressed in identical blouses and above the knee knickers with unusual bows. Their sister wears a plaid dress. All the children wear long stockings. We are not sure when this portrait was taken. A German reader estimates that it was taken about 1900.

We note Danish boys wearing the same neckwear styles as in the rest of Europe. Danish styles appear heavily influenced by German styles. We have, however, only begun to acquire images depicting Danish neckwear. Here we see Danish boys wearing blouses with rather unusal neckwear, bows that look rather like wide neckties. We are unsure how to date the image, but would guess about 1900. e doubt if the neckwear here was very common. This is what happens when you work with small samples. Another portrait taken about the same time shows a a boy about the same age as the older boy here wearing a more convetional floppy bow. We suspect the mother here did not know how to tie a bow properly or for whatever reason didnot want to do so.
